Three Little Pigs 3D for the iPad – App Review
The multimedia capabilities of the iPad make it an ideal edutainment tool and a favorite Christmas list gadget for the coming holiday season. We’ve reviewed lots of children’s books and jsut took a look at the new Three Little Pigs 3D iPad app recently featured in the App Store’s What’s Hot section. In this app, Amazing Books brings the classic story of the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf to life on the iPad while embracing its multimedia capabilities.
Kids and parents will enjoy the modern version of this story when they sit down to read and play together. Readers may choose to view the story in traditional 2D (mono) mode or don a pair of red and blue glasses to take advantage of the 3D (stereo) technology.
The story can be viewed in portrait mode and readers have the choice to read on their own or have the story read to them. At the bottom of each page are four control buttons, two to move forward or backward in the story, one to listen to the story and the other to read yourself. As you advance through the book, you must choose either the speaker button or the text button on each page.
The best part of each page is the animated story. The colorful graphics and 3D animation controlled by the reader make this book lots of fun. Along with the four buttons at the bottom of each page, there is also a scrollbar in the middle with a pig’s head on it. Tap the pig, drag your finger across the scrollbar and watch each scene come to life on the screen. You’ll get to watch the pigs play, build their houses, and of course, defeat the wolf at your own pace and as many times as you like.
What I liked: The colorful graphics and 3D capability were great. I liked being able to control the animation on each page as I went through the story.
What I didn’t like: You can’t select the read-to-me or read yourself option once at the beginning of the story but rather, must choose each time you move to a new page. Also, if you select the read yourself option, a page of text appears on the screen nearly covering the entire picture.
To buy or not to buy: This is a fun 20 page story that preschoolers, early elementary age kids and parents can read together. Download this modern day version of the Three Little Pigs now and enjoy it at bedtime tonight.
