A Third of iPad Owners Have Never, Ever Downloaded A Single App!

Nielsen released an interesting report this morning, highlighting how the iPad’s popularity is starting to change how people consume media. As usual, the analysis shows the iPad as a great platform to gain easy access to content such as books, shows and videos, however, the report also include a tiny, yet mind-blowing comment: 32% of iPad owners interviewed have never, ever downloaded an application!

In other words, a large chunk of iPad owners seem to use the device as-is, as Safari, as well as the Photos, Videos and iPod apps seem to cover most of their needs.

As for the folks who actually bought some content from the App Store, the most popular categories are books, games, and music – not exactly shocking given that three out of the five most purchased apps in the App Store are games at this very moment.

Surprisingly, while the iPad was seen by many as a device that could potentially be largely successful with the enterprise market, productivity, travel planning and financial apps are at the bottom of the list. In other words, most iPad owners mainly bought the device for entertainment purposes.

Correct me if I am wrong… but per statement “In other words, a large chunk of iPad owners seem to use the device as-is, as iBooks, Safari and the iPod apps seem to cover most of their needs.” seems to be incorrect.

iBooks needs to be downloaded to a stock iPad.

Correct, thanks for pointing this out

No, it means one third of iPad users install pirated and cracked apps on their iPad, which won’t count in these reports.

    That’s the reason!

That seems almost unbelievable like there is a disconnect. That can’t possibly be representative of all iPad users. I know I didn’t get a call. I bet the 32% is of 100 or 1000 users polled. It seems that if 19.5 million pads were sold that 6.24 million people not downloading a single app is impossible. If it is true, I wonder of those how many are institutional or enterprise use that might be locked to the app store.

I am not really surprised….. I have seen iPhone owners who where really (happily) surprised once I pointed out the App Store…. => and I do think a lot of iPad owners are even less into “the app thingy”…. ;)
