Verizon iPad: Additional 3GB & 5GB Data Plans, Trying to Attract Power Users Currently on AT&T

On top of the 1GB plan announced yesterday by Verizon, the wireless provider will also offer additional plans for heavy data users who decide to purchase the upcoming iPad+MiFi bundle.

The new plans will offer 3GB and 5GB worth of data per month, for $35 and $50 respectively. The 1GB plan announced yesterday will cost $20 per month.

If you haven’t bought an iPad yet, and you are not sure whether you need an iPad 3G running on AT&T’s network, or an iPad+MiFi bundle via Verizon, here are some pros and cons that should help you make the best choice, depending on your situation:

  • On a per GB basis, Verizon’s plans are slightly more competitive than AT&T, as AT&T currently offers two options, 250MB per month for $15 and 2GB per month for $25 [Verizon wins]
  • Verizon’s iPad+MiFi bundle is a little more clunky than the iPad 3G [AT&T wins]
  • The MiFi allows up to 5 devices to be connected to Verizon’s network simultaneously [Verizon wins]
  • If you do not use much data, AT&T offers the cheapest plan [AT&T wins]

In a nutshell, if you happen to be a heavy user, with multiple devices, Verizon is likely a better choice for you. If you prefer simplicity, and a device always connected, AT&T is the way to go.

Why go with either when Virin Mobile (Sprint 3G?) offers their mifi for $40 per month, unlimited?

See PadGadget articles on 8/26 and another for Clear on 8/30.

Correct, Virgin offers an alternate, cheaper option, if unlimited is what you need. If you only need a couple GBs per month, the Verizon MiFi offer is more cost efficient though. Also, the MiFi in the Verizon bundle ends up $30 cheaper than Virgin’s MiFi. Finally, Virgin is out of stock for now. It all boils down to what your usage patterns look like and how much data you consume per month:
      - Not much data, AT&T has the cheapest plan.
      - If you are a power user, but use less than 5GB a month, Verizon seems like a better option.
      - If you absolutely need unlimited, Virgin is the cheapest.

Also the Verizon network is a lot more powerful than virgin’s network. If you travel a lot this totally will effect your decision. I’m going with Verizon for sure. Although 40 unlimited is a hard offer to turn away from.
