My Very First App for iPad – App Review

Great news, Eric Carle has reached the iPad! If you have kids, you probably have at least one Eric Carle book lying around the house and now your toddlers and preschoolers can enjoy the same brightly colored illustrations typical found in his books right on the iPad. Adapted from Carle’s My Very First Books series, Night and Day Studios recently launched My Very First App in the App Store.
My Very First App is a combination matching and memory style game youngsters will love. It incorporates Carle’s “distinctive hand-painted tissue collage style” pictures and three levels of game play: easy, medium and hard. The screen in the “easy” level is divided in half, with the top half displaying colors and the bottom showing a variety of pictures. The object of this level is to match each picture with its corresponding color by swiping colors and pictures from left to right until you make the appropriate match.
The next level (medium) displays 16 cards which kids must tap to reveal and match either like colors or pictures while the “hard” level requires little ones to match pictures with the corresponding colors. Little ones will have fun testing their memories and skill against mom and dad while playing this cute, interactive game.
In addition to the color matching in My Very First App, users can buy additional game sets with an in-app purchase. Each additional purchase costs $0.99 and you can choose between four different game sets. Additional sets include:
- Animal Sounds – match animals with the sounds they make
- Numbers – count fruit and match them with the correct number
- Shapes – match real-world objects with similar shapes
- Food – match animals with the food they eat
What I liked: This app has the great illustrations kids know and love from the Eric Carle books, three game levels and a great price.
What I didn’t like: Users must tap and hold buttons to change from one screen to the next.
To buy or not to buy: Yes! If your little ones enjoy Eric Carle books, they’ll have fun with this brightly colored, interactive kids app.
