Skee-Ball HD for iPad – App Review
Every month it seems that there is a set of new games for iOS devices and many other platforms. With all the video games coming out, sometimes you’ll find a game that is simple, but yet quite fun that makes you want to play it over and over again. That’s what happens with Skee-Ball HD.
Skee-Ball HD is one of those games that brings you back to your younger days. Yes. The days before there was a Nintendo, XBOX 360, iPhone, iPad in every home. It will remind you of those days you spent at your local arcade with all your friends. A game that tricks you into playing it because you never know when you’re going to get that magic combination of great shots that result in an all time high score.
Developer Freeverse has released this iPad game just about a year later after their iPhone version. If you like their iPhone game, you’ll like the new iPad version which looks very good on the bigger screen and has added more levels and prizes.
The game’s objective is simple. Simply flick the ball up the ramp into one of the cups to score points. For every game you earn tickets, which can be redeemed for all kinds of prizes. Skee-Ball HD tries to emulate the physics of the real game so that you have the same feeling now as you did back then. The game features HD quality graphics and offers a 3D style background. Once you become more experienced, you can tilt your iPad for spin and tricks or try even harder shots.
The game’s scoring system is very similar to the iPhone game, whereby hitting certain highlighted cups will help you reach great scores and positively impact your multiplier for the next game. Keep in mind that you can improve your score by landing the ball in the highlighted cup. Try to increase your score as much as you can to earn more tickets and a chance to win more prizes.
Skee-Ball HD is part of the Plus+ network, which allows to post online high scores and achievements. Try to beat your friends’ high scores for either ticket accumulation or points. Feel free to challenge them to a duel.
As you keep playing this game, and you will, you’ll be able to cash in the tickets you’ve won for different prizes that include – alternate lanes, custom Skee-Balls like the Sun Ball, Dinosaur Egg Ball, Moo Ball, and odd prizes like Vampire Teeth, Peruvian Flute Band CD, and more. There are also four in-app purchase expansion packs each costing $0.99 giving you new lanes, balls, and prizes.
What we liked: Skee-Ball HD features HD graphics and looks great on the iPad. The physics engine is very good and makes the game feels as close as possible to the real arcade game. Compared to the iPhone game, the iPad version is easier to control given the extra screen space, which gives you room to flick the ball up the ramp quite easily. Quite a fun game.
What we didn’t like: The game is a lot of fun, but some of the prizes you earn are not usable. Basically, some of the prizes you collect will be sitting in your “trophy” case. Perhaps, the developer could add tougher ramps and you could use some of your prizes to advance to new and harder levels.
To buy or not to buy: Skee-Ball HD is a highly addictive game that is easy to pick up and play. The game brings realistic physics and great 3D graphics that have been enhanced to take full advantage of your iPad. The game is a very good download for your iPad.
