FaceTime on the Next-Gen iPad, Really?

email

Since the iPad’s launch back in April, a camera has been one of the most requested features by many. But, we haven’t seen any hints by Apple that lead us to believe they will indeed release a new iPad with a camera in the near future. We’ve only heard general rumors.

During Apple’s Media event this past week, many speculated that the e-mail-based FaceTime feature revealed on the new iPod Touch would also make it into a newer version of the iPad. After Steve Jobs unveiled the HDR photography feature coming to the iPad (on iOS 4.2), many folks speculated again about a camera coming to the iPad’s nex-gen model.

Now there is a new rumor about Apple already testing a front camera with a future model of the iPad. The blog 9 to 5 Mac released a blurry photo that supposedly shows a next-gen iPad equipped with a camera to test video calls. To be honest, it’s very hard to tell if indeed this is an iPad testing video calls. It seems that new rumors just started again as we move closer to the holiday season. Hard to tell if this is true or not. But, one thing is for sure, iPad competitors are coming in a few months, and several have talked about launching their tablets with a camera. What do you think?

I think you might have a typo:
“After Steve Jobs unveiled the HDR photography feature coming to the iPad (on iOS 4.2), many folks speculated again about a camera coming to the iPad’s nex-gen model.”

Do you mean the HDR feature coming to the iPod / iPhone? I don’t think Steve confirmed HDR for the iPad as he hasn’t yet confirmed the iPad will have a camera (though it undoubtedly will).

    Hi Arple,

    Thanks for reading PadGadget.

We’re referring to the iOS family features (including HDR) being unified on the same version with the release of iOS 4.2. In his keynote (Sept 1), Steve Jobs mentioned that they plan to introduce all of the iOS 4 features into the iPad release iOS 4.2

If you watch the keynote from September 1st, right around 15:45 (mins/secs), Steve mentions that HDR Photos is part of the iOS 4.2 for iPad. He mentions “…multitasking, folders, game center, HDR photos, everything you saw here, all of it to the iPad.” That is one of the reasons why many have already started speculating about the next-gen iPad.

I just don’t have any use for a back-facing camera on the iPad (the size just makes it awkward for taking photos or video), but a front-facing one for FaceTime makes sense. I think this one will happen on the next version.

Will it be possible technically/financially for a new version of the iPad to support the HD display currently found in the iPhones and just announced for the iPod touch. Or do you think that Apple wants to keep all their devices on about the same resolution because the resolution of the iPad would be rediculously high with the same density of display as the current iPhones.
