Twitter for iPad – App Review

email

Twitter has just released their new Twitter for iPad client and it’s a slick little app.  This new iPad client release comes almost five months after app developer atebits, maker of the popular Tweetie iPhone and Mac Twitter client,  was acquired by Twitter.

With the new application, Twitter has focused on making it easier to work with content links in tweets. Twitter for iPad has a revamped user interface making it simpler to deal with media in links and much quicker to move around in.  The app has several new and unique features.

Panes – The interface is divided into moveable panes allowing you to swipe to move between a list of messages, individual tweets or content (web pages, photos, video, etc) that might be linked in a tweet.  The pane based setup takes a second to get used to but is a cool and easy way to quickly move through your tweets on your iPad. In no time you’ll be swiping left and right to move around in this new app.

Media – Twitter for iPad can open a wide range of media types, so now you don’t have to jump out of the app to look at your favorite video.  Another benefit of the panes based interface is the ability to open up a new pane for a video and while its loading, you can go back to read another tweet or browse your timeline.  Once the video is ready to play, you simply swipe back to the pane to begin watching.  If you want to watch the video in full screen mode, simply pinch to zoom and you’re set to go.

Gestures – Twitter for iPad supports several new innovative gestures to help you move around faster inside the app.  By placing two fingers on a tweet and dragging down, you can view the entire conversation associated with that tweet.  If you want to get more information on a tweet such as the user’s profile details, simply pinch to zoom on a tweet and the user’s profile along with shortcuts to reply or retweet are just a tap away.

Twitter for iPad works great in either landscape or portrait mode and is available for free from the Apple App Store.

What I liked: Fast, simple and easy to use.  Great way for viewing and managing your Twitter messages.

What I didn’t like: The new movable panes interface takes a second to get used to but is great once you get the hang of it.

To get or not to get: If you’ve been looking for a good Twitter client then Twitter for iPad should be on your shortlist.  Best part is it’s free!
