Apple Releases iTunes 10 with Ping Social Network Feature
Steve Jobs took the wraps off the new iTunes 10 during today’s special media event in San Francisco. The latest version of iTunes incorporates several new features sure to become favorites with iOS device owners.
- Ping – Ping is Apple’s new social network for music. Ping allows users to follow their favorite artists and see the music they like, get the latest artist photos, news, and status updates. Users can also create their own profile page where they can share their music tastes and allow friends to follow with the simple click of a button. Ping is also integrated into the iPhone and iPod and will be available on the iPad when iOS 4.2 is released.
- TV Show Rentals – Apple has added TV rentals to the iTunes store. Users can now access thousands of commercial free HD TV shows for only 99¢ per episode. Rentals are good for 30 days and you have 48 hours to finish watching an episode once you begin viewing a show.
- AirPlay – Apple has replaced the former AirTunes music streaming feature with the all new AirPlay, reflecting the new feature’s wider scope. With AirPlay users can now stream audio, video and photos over WiFi to an AirTunes enabled device. Denon, Marantz, JBL, iHome and B&W have already announced support for the new technology and will be incorporating it into their new AV gear later this year.
- Improved Syncing – iTunes 10 improves syncing by providing a real-time capacity bar showing you how much space you have left on your device. New organizational tools make sorting and organizing apps on your iPad or iPhone even easier than before. This is definitely one feature we’re looking forward to.
The new iTunes 10 can be downloaded directly from the iTunes website or via Apple’s Software Update.
