Apple Launches All New iPod Lineup

email

The waiting is over!  Apple’s Special Event wrapped up earlier today with Steve Jobs showing several new products, including 3 new iPod models. The new iPods will hit the market over the next few weeks and Apple fanboys are anxiously awaiting many of them for the holiday shopping season.

iPod Shuffle

If you’re in the market for something tiny to access your favorite music, playlists and Genius mixes while you’re out and about, check out Apple’s new iPod Shuffle.  This amazing new device is small, light weight and available in enough colors to make it a great fashion accessory.  The Shuffle’s well-known clip lets you take it along to the gym, on your way to class or while you’re shredding your way down the mountain this ski season.  Back by popular demand is the clickable control pad, now even larger and easier to use.

  • Battery life – 15 hour audio playback
  • Colors include – Pink, orange, green, blue, silver
  • 2 GB for $49.00
  • Pre-order today, on-sale in stores next week

iPod Nano

We’ve got two Nanos in our house and I suspect the updated models might appear on some Christmas lists this year.  The new Nano is smaller, lighter and even better than previous versions.  The click wheel is gone and a new multitouch display makes it easier to use and navigate than before.  This Nano is the first iPod to include a built in FM radio and of course you have your standard access to music, movies, podcasts, photos and more.  A clip lets you attach the Nano to your clothes making it instantly wearable and great for workouts or when you’re on-the-go.  Screen position rotates easily using two fingers if you happen to clip your device on upside down.

  • Battery life – 24 hour audio playback
  • Standard colors include – Pink, orange, green, blue, silver, graphite
  • Special Edition color – RED (with $10 going to the global fund to fight AIDS)
  • 8 GB for $149
  • 16 GB for $179
  • Pre-order today, on-sale in stores next week

iPod Touch

The popularity of the iPod Touch launched it into the position of “most popular iPod” in the last year.  It is also the number one portable game player in the world, the Touch outsells the combined sales of Nintendo and Sony portable game players.

So, what does the new Touch have to offer?  Like the iPhone 4, it includes retina display, 4 X pixels, 326 ppi, 24 bit color and an LED backlit display.  It provides a three axis gyro for better gaming ability and iOS 4.1 with Apple’s new feature Game Center.  You’ll also be able to use front and back facing cameras for Face Time.

  • Battery life – 40 hour audio playback
  • 8 GB for $229
  • 32 GB for $299
  • 64 GB for $399
  • Pre-order today, on-sale in stores next week

As usual, everyone that makes products these days assumes that we all have huge bandwidths. We do not. I have the older Apple TV which works fine for us as it can download to a disk. The new one is useless to those who cannot get high speeds due to their location. I guess once my old one dies I will have to buy something non-Apple.

      WAM,

you’ll still be able to use the new Apple TV like the old one (except for local storage). If you have your music or movies on a Mac you’ll be able to stream them over WiFi or Ethernet to your new Apple TV all over your local network. If you want to rent something from the iTunes Store, you’d have the same bandwidth constraint as with your current Apple TV. Although we could not find out the exact memory specs of the new Apple TV, we assume there will be enough memory to buffer the video streams for people on slower connections. If the memory buffer is not large enough to hold a movie, then you’re right that people on slow connections might have an issue with streaming.
