Free iPad Offers – Beware!

email

Email and web scams offering stuff for free are not a novelty, and since its launch, the iPad has not been spared. Just type “free iPad” in Google, and you’ll quickly notice that most results link to fishy websites.

However, a new form of scam specific to the iPad has recently surfaced: messages offering free iPads are sent by your friends via Facebook and Twitter. The scam leverages hacked Twitter/Facebook accounts, and since the messages come from your contacts, many folks seem to believe the offer is legitimate, and end up following the links given by the compromised tweet or post.

According to Mashable, Twitter’s security-related account @safety recently posted the following message: “If you’ve received a message promising you a new ipad, not only is there no ipad, but also your friends have been hacked.” Twitter also said it will be “sending out password resets to hacked individuals.” As for Facebook, the number of users affected by the hack is more limited, but is still fairly high, so be cautious.

Offers that seem too good to be true are exactly that – too good to be true. If fishy messages have been sent from your account, you should change the password immediately. And if you received such a message, simply discard it – there is no free iPad waiting for you.
