iShine Microfiber iPad Sleeve – Accessory Review

Keeping your iPad’s large glass screen clean can be a challenge.  With its touch based interface, the iPad is a magnet for fingerprints and smears which come from daily use.  We were intrigued to hear about a new iPad sleeve from iShine which touts itself as the “sleeve that protects and cleans.”  So does the iShine sleeve live up to its motto? Read on.

I’ve been using the iShine for the past few days and carried it with me to test its abilities.  Our iShine evaluation unit was well made and had a nice simple design.  The entire sleeve is made of a soft glass-cleaning microfiber cloth that provides a comfy home for your iPad while its not in use. The sleeve fit snugly on my iPad and protected it from scratches while I carried it in my main computer bag.  The iShine sleeve is not padded, so it does not protect your iPad from bangs or falls, but it is ideal for storing your iPad in a purse or a computer bag, which is the way I normally travel with mine.

To test out the iShine’s cleaning ability, we did a few unscientific tests.  For the first test, I put my iPad into the sleeve after using it for a few hours and then put the whole thing in to my computer bag for the commute home. When I arrived home and removed my iPad form the iShine, the fingerprints were gone.  The movement in the bag was enough to wipe away normal fingerprints but what about heavy duty smears?

To test a more extreme scenario, I rubbed my hands with lotion and then proceeded to play a half hour of Plants vs. Zombies on my iPad.  Needless to say, the glass was very smeared by the time I was done.  I stuck the iPad in the iShine and went on my way to catch a flight at the airport.  Later on the plane, I removed my iPad from the sleeve and I noticed some of the smears were gone but there were still several smudges. I simply reinserted the iPad and gave it two or three rubs and it came out looking brand new. You can also take the sleeve and use it to wipe up smears, much like you would do with a cleaning cloth.

You can can get the iPad iShine Sleeve for $12.95 from Amazon.  An iPhone iShine sleeve is available for $5.95 or you can get an iPhone and iPad bundle for $16.95.

What I liked: The iShine sleeve is a great option for anyone looking for a small and lightweight sleeve.  The microfiber material did a great job of keeping my iPad clean and scratch free during my daily commute.

What I didn’t like: Lack of padding might be an issue for some.

To buy or not to buy: At $12.95 the iShine is one of the least expensive sleeves we’ve found and seems like a great deal for anyone that struggles to keep their iPad’s screen clean and is always searching for a cleaning cloth.

The material looks great, yet I would be one of those people who would have issues with the lack of padding.

I’m still not sure if an iPad is too delicate for heavy handling, while a laptop would be.

I found this article in Squidoo that compares this great gadget with laptops, here’s the link:
