Vimeo Makes the Move to HTML5 [UPDATED]
Popular online video sharing site Vimeo, is rolling out a new HTML5 based Universal Player later today which will support new mobile devices like the iPad and iPhone. The new player automatically detects the device being used and determines the device’s capabilities to properly deliver video in an optimized format for that device.
Vimeo’s approach improves the mobile video experience for users who don’t have flash based players on their device, such as Apple’s iPhone and iPad. It also simplifies web publishers’ lives by providing a single Universal Player, eliminating the need for multiple video formats to support the wide range of mobile devices, each with their own unique set of capabilities.
Apple’s rejection of Adobe’s Flash technology on the iPad and iPhone has forced publishers to look at alternative video distribution methods, with HTML5 and h.264 being the leading choices. CBS is one of the leading video sites adopting HTML5 and h.264 and plans to move CBS.com to the new format by this fall.
Update: Since the video we initially selected has been removed from Vimeo, we embedded a new sample video, available below the fold.
