Rumor of Upcoming 7-inch iPad Still Going Strong

The tech blog iLounge mentioned earlier today that one of their highly reliable sources told them that Apple is planning to release smaller versions of the iPad soon – confirming in the process the rumor started by Digitimes about 3 weeks ago.

The new version of the iPad is apparently finalized from an engineering standpoint, will feature a 7-inch screen, and should be announced either later this year or early in 2011.

This new version seems to be targeted specifically at the e-readers market, in order to help Apple better fight against devices like the Amazon Kindle.

    I’m not sure this is credible, although the source has been reliable in the past. I don’t see Apple being insecure enough to think they need to compete with the Kindle. In my opinion, it’s the other way around. Where Apple needs to catch up is in its iBook store offerings, not its hardware, which is doing just fine.
