RIM Preparing to Enter the Tablet Market?

email

Apple’s successful launch of the iPad has other companies scrambling to get their tablet plans in order. Smartphone maker RIM has been rumored to be working on a tablet device to compete with the “magical” gadget from Cupertino. The name for RIM’s latest device? BlackPad.

According to MobileCrunch, Waterloo based RIM recently purchased the BlackPad.com domain name to presumably use as a landing spot for their upcoming Android based tablet device.  The domain was previously registered by another owner and there is no word on the amount RIM had to pay to get their hands on the domain.

Of course, just because RIM purchased BlackPad.com does not mean they have plans to use it or that any of their future products will carry the BlackPad name.  It’s not unusual for large companies to register or purchase several domains that end up never being used. Often times, companies purchase domains to protect their brands or to throw off the competition and the press on future product plans.

Early reaction to the new name has been mixed with many people saying they hoped RIM would come up with something more original. There’s no official word from RIM on the domain purchase so we’ll have to wait it out and see how our friends North of the border decide to use their new BlackPad domain.

What do you think about the BlackPad name?  Think you have a better name for RIM’s tablet?  Show us your brand mastery in the comment section below.

You mention that this rumored device will be an Android-based tool. Where did that specific bit of information come from? I get the rumor of a pad device coming from a URL registry, but the operating system?

There has been some back-and-forth on which OS RIM may use for their rumored tablet device. Some stories pointed to an Android OS, while others said RIM has put the Android based device on hold and will instead use BlackBerry OS 6. Right now it’s anyone’s guess to what the exact specs of the device will be. We’ll keep our eyes open for any news that might leak out.
