Indian Government Unveils $35 Tablet

Move over iPad, the BBC reports the Indian government announced a tablet computer it claims can be made for $35. Intended for use by students, this new tablet will be focused on web browsing, video conferencing and word processing only. The tablet’s storage will be done via memory cards, and it will run on solar power, so there is no need for batteries.

The cost of the Indian iPad is expected to be much less than its Apple counterpart, but the tablet will clearly be a lot less feature-rich. A manufacturer is currently being sought to produce the tablet they hope to roll out next year.

Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal states, “The solutions for tomorrow will emerge from India” but we’ll have to wait and see if the tablet plans really come to fruition.  Last year the same government officials announced they were about to unveil a $10 laptop which never happened.
