New iPad Models Launched Later This Year [RUMOR]

A new rumor that Apple will be launching new iPads within the next 5 months just surfaced today. According to Digitimes, the new generation of iPads will feature 2 additional models, a 5.6-inch display version, and a 7-inch version, both using OLED screens instead of the LED display currently featured in the 9.7-inch iPad.

Digitimes stressed that their sources ”noted that Apple has recently placed new iPad orders to Taiwan-based component makers for the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 with 9.7-inch, 5.6-inch and 7-inch models all included”. Apparently, the new models will be mainly targeted at the e-readers market, and their price points will be lower than the current model.

It is somewhat hard to believe that Apple will launch 2 new models with such similar screen sizes, however, it would not be surprising to see a new, smaller iOS device released soon, in order to directly compete with e-readers like the Kindle.

I know these sorts of rumours are rarely wrong but I’m secretly hopeful! I can’t afford 2 iPads in a year, lol!

This would be the worst thing Apple could do right now. They have barely begun to penetrate the market with a product whose most confusing selling point is, “why do I need this?”. The iPad does nothing that a smartphone or Laptop cannot do. The iPad in itself already creates a mild sense of confusion for the new potential Apple customer. More sizes would just make it worse. Joe Everyman shuts down at the first sign of confusion. For us nerds, this rumor sounds great. 10″ iPad at home. 5″ iPad in our man purse. iPhone in our pocket. But, the little shred of non geek that each of us clings to reminds us to feel awkward at the thought of our hands being rendered useless by the three screens we are carrying around. Mobile devices are meant to empower us to do the things we love, not to weigh us down and BE the things we love.

There is already an an iPad nano. It’s called the iPod touch.
