Jungle Fractions for iPad – First Look

email

Not too long ago I reviewed Jungle Time for iPad by developer Andrew Short and really liked the brightly colored, jungle themed, time telling app for kids.  Jungle Fractions, his latest app, incorporates the same theme and has already been featured in  ”What’s Hot”, “New and Noteworthy” and “Top Paid Apps” in the App Store.

True to its name, Jungle Fractions teaches elementary age kids all about fractions using large, easy to read, pie wedges and jungle animals. This fully customizable app lets kids choose from five jungle animals (lion, tiger, elephant, hippo and panda) and their sounds, multiple learning levels and several different skills.  Five learning levels cover fractions from halves (1/2) up to eighths (1/8) and each level builds on the next.  For example, once your child masters Level 1 (halves, thirds and fourths) and moves onto Level 2 (fifths), questions will incorporate fractions from both Level 1 and 2.

Jungle Fractions also teaches several different skills:

  • Name – shows a fraction and kids use the dial to enter their answer
  • Compare – displays two pies and kids enter whether the first one is <, > or  = to the second
  • Convert – lets kids change improper fractions into mixed fractions (numbers) or vice versa
  • Add – displays two pies and two fractions and kids must add them together

All these skills can be a little tricky if your child is new to fractions, but don’t worry!  Learn mode provides simple explanations and examples of a numerator, denominator and fraction which will help them master the skills in no time.

If you’ve got kids in Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd Grade, this app is a great way to help them learn about fractions.  You can buy Jungle Fractions in the App Store now for $2.99.
