Nokia to Compete Against the iPad

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia is eyeing to get into the iPad market space with a new push to release a tablet device. According to Digitimes, Nokia is planing to launch an ARM based tablet device in the fourth quarter of 2010. The device will likely adopt the Linux based Meego operating system, which is an open source collaboration between Intel and Nokia.

According to a Digitimes analyst, “Nokia has already completed about 100 engineering samples ready for testing. The tablet PC’s panel size will be either 7- or 9-inch and manufactured by Foxconn International Holdings, the Hong Kong-listed handset subsidiary of Foxconn Electronics.”

Nokia has played with smaller tablet like devices in the past such as the N770 and the N800. Neither device saw significant sales as Nokia has struggled to keep up with smartphone competition form Apple, Google and RIM. With over two million iPads already sold, Nokia will have to put together a compelling device in order to compete.

Yeah, I agree, Nokia will have a hard time unless they put up something that surprises us.

I have all three units (N800, N810 and the iPad)
The Nokia units came out a few years ago and the hardware and software are a few generations better than the iPad and OS4. (Other than screen size)

I think the Nokia units failed because they were a little more technically advanced and not really “dumbed” down for the average user.
It took a bit of time to learn how to find and install new programs on the Nokia units.
I can see Nokia giving Apple a run for the money.
