Meteor Blitz HD for iPad – App Review

If you are into shooting games, one of Apple’s “Best of 2009″ is now available on the iPad. Meteor Blitz HD has joined the iPad App Store to get you hooked into a “dual-thumb” shooter game.
The iPhone/iTouch version of this game has been a hit, and now it brings the same excitement to your iPad.
Pilot your ship through worlds that will demand the utmost in reaction time and weapon use. With a plasma gun, flamethrower, and ice cannon at your disposal, plus the unique gravity gun, gather rings and purchase upgrades to become a formidable threat to any wandering enemy in your range. You get multiple weapons and upgrades.
The game is a “dual-thumb” shooter with a fun techno soundtrack and massive explosions, which makes it an exciting space-game blaster. You can compete in Arcade or Survival mode for the high score on the global leaderboard that updates in-game, in realtime. You can also play your iPod music in the background.
Have you ever played Super Stardust HD on the Play Station platform? If you have, Meteor Blitz HD will be very familiar to you. The iPad game is almost a cross between Super Stardust HD and another iPad game called Geometry Wars. You will get an effective mix of asteroids and geometry wars while using your two thumbs to shoot your way through thousands of interstellar rocks and aliens. The ongoing theme is to simply obliterate everything. This is not an easy feat I must say!
The game is a lot of fun and very addictive. It keeps you on the edge while running away from explosions, slow-motion, and particle effects that make the slow-motion explosions even more explosive.
What we liked: There is a lot to like about this game. The near-instant load times, auto-save, real-time high score rankings, and the nice way to play it in your iPad’s larger screen.
- Auto-Pause: Your game pauses the instant you take your thumbs off the controls. Gives you a chance to rest after all the non-stop action.
- Auto-Save/Instant Resume: Your game saves automatically whenever you quit the game.
- Live In-Game Global Ranking: Your global leaderboard ranking appears in the upper-left corner and updates in real-time as your score improves.
What we didn’t like: There is a lot to like about the game. The controls are very good for slow flying, dodging meteors and enemies, shooting with your gravity gun and much more. The only thing is we would like to see a feature for configurable controls. If a young person is playing the game, the controls may be too far apart. However, the developer has already promised configurable controls in an upcoming release.
To buy or not to buy: If you are into shooting games, this game brings an effective mix of asteroids and geometry wars with non-stop action. If you already own the iPhone game, upgrading to the HD version should be easy. The HD game gives you very good graphics and a larger playing field. Of all the space-shooting type games, this is a very good download for your iPad!
