If you’re an iPad owner, there’s a good chance that you’re either a gadget geek or you simply enjoy adopting new technology. Early adopters often tend to be the ones pursuing a “connected lifestyle” through the implementation of home automation or wireless entertainment systems. If you fall into this camp, you’ll be happy to know that the iPad is quickly becoming an integral piece of the connected home with several vendors (such as Savant, Meridian and Crestron) already providing iPad ready solutions.
If you’re a home media and automation enthusiast, Savant just rolled out a new $500 in-wall iPad docking solution which allows you to mount your iPad directly in a wall. This is a great option for using the iPad as an individual room or whole house control unit. With the Savant iPad app, users can control video, audio, lighting, climate, security and other settings.
The docks magnetically-attached removable bezels allow you the added flexibility of being able to easily remove the iPad from its in-wall dock and take it with you anywhere in the house. The dock is also available as a $350 desktop unit and both nicely complement Savant’s Home Automation iPad app to create an attractive iPad-based control solution.
Another option for audiophiles, with a little extra to spend, is the Sooloos Digital Media System from Meridian Audio, Britiain’s high-end audio and video entertainment equipment maker. If you have a Sooloos system, you can download their free iPad app to browse, store, manage, and play high quality audio from multiple zones around your home. The app features WiFi auto-discovery and the ability to browse by artist, genre, release date, import date, and tags directly from the iPad.
Meridian & Crestron iPad apps
Crestron, a leader in control and automation solutions, has also integrated the iPad into its home automation product lineup. The Crestron Mobile Pro G app allows you to use the iPad as a media or home automation touchpanel. The app provides similar control functions as Savant and Meridian, giving users control of their movies, music and TV in any room and the ability to adjust volume, lighting levels and room temperature. If you have a 3G iPad, you can even adjust your home’s settings while you’re away from home. The app’s interface is also completely customizable allowing you to create a look and feel that’s all yours.
With the wide range of home automation and entertainment companies embracing the iPad as part of their solutions, the iPad is poised to redefine Home Automation.
