iPads Not Allowed at Yankee Stadium?

Are you a New York Yankees fan? If you happen to be a baseball fan, and you like the reigning World Series champions, there is nothing better than to experience a baseball game in New York. The fans love their Yankees and their baseball.

I watch lots of sports. I have followed the Yankees since I was a kid. Hopefully, you will not hate me for it!

I have been watching Yankees games for a long time. Every time I turn on my TV, I see baseball fans on their smart-phones texting and talking to others. You cannot avoid that. It is simply a fact of life!

However, if you are planning to go to Yankees Stadium, keep your iPad at home. Recently, at a game against the Boston Red Sox, a woman who was carrying her iPad was turned away by the security staff at the gate.

Apparently, Yankees Stadium officials think your iPad poses a safety risk. Is it a weapon? If you read the New York Yankees security policies, the team mentions several items that are prohibited at the stadium. Some of the items mentioned are: laptop computers, and  “…any other devices that may interfere with and/or distract any sports participant, other patron, audio or audio/visual telecast or recording of the game or any technology-related service provided in Yankee Stadium”.

I guess the Yankees already consider the iPad as a “laptop replacement”. But, I would like to question the Yankees’ judgment in this case. Major League Baseball (MLB) has always been very active in terms of delivering their product via the latest technology gadgets. MLB offers an iPad app on the App Store called At Bat 2010. So, why not let the fans bring their new toy to the games?

We have entered another great wave of innovation. After the PC and the Internet, we have now entered the wave of mobile, social, and e-commerce. Your iPad has changed the way many people communicate and the way they consume content like baseball games and game stats.

Unless someone considers the iPad a dangerous weapon, I would say let the fans bring their new toy to the games. Many stadiums do offer free Wi-Fi today. After all, it is another way to let your fans stay connected at all times.

Eventually the Yankees may provide those types of services, but if they’re already available free or they’re a distraction it’s not likely to work.
