The iPad Accelerates The Adoption Of New Technologies
The MeFeedia media search engine constantly crawls the web and indexes all videos available across the globe (YouTube, Hulu, Vimeo, CBS, ABC, etc…), and recently uncovered an interesting tidbit: the number of H.264/HTML5-ready – and therefore iPad-ready – videos available on the web has increased sharply since the launch of the iPad. From 10% of all web videos back in January, the number almost tripled in 4 months: 26% of all web videos are now using H.264 encoding, and HTML5 control wrappers.
Most major TV and news networks were the slowest shops to jump on the HTML5 bandwagon, but are now ramping up their efforts to provide iPad-ready content, so expect this number to keep growing at a steady pace over the next months. Unsurprisingly, the adult video industry is leading the pack, as most adult sites are now turning to HTML5/H.264 to reach the growing audience of iPad users – a way to circumvent the App Store’s very strict policies when it comes to adult content.
Interestingly enough, most analysts agree that this trend is mostly driven by the iPad and its fast growing installed base, a major blow for Adobe, as its Flash technology is the current leader when it comes videos on the web. The iPad is really pushing the envelope, as HTML5 is not a finalized standard yet, its official launch is scheduled for early 2012.
