Angry Birds HD – iPad Game Review

email

Angry Birds HD is one of these silly games that will get you addicted in no time. The game was released on the iPad about a month ago, and has constantly been highly ranked in our apps tracker, but to be honest I never thought about giving it a try, as I initially thought the game was for young kids. That was until yesterday, when a friend of mine downloaded it to my iPad, so I gave it a try… I ended up playing the whole evening and most of the night.

Angry Birds HD is a whacky puzzler where the goal is to kill green pigs by throwing a variety of birds at them – note that the pigs stole the birds’ eggs, hence why they are angry, and suicidal! Each bird has its own destructive power, such as:

  • Fragmentation bomb birds
  • High speed kamikaze birds
  • Explosive kamikaze birds
  • Birds able to drop explosive eggs

The pigs hide behind fortified castles, and the number and kinds of birds you have on hand to destroy them is predefined, and limited. This is where the game requires a bit of imagination, as you need to find specific parts of the castles to target depending on the birds you are given, in order to whack all the pigs on the screen. The pigs come in different flavors and sizes, the bigger, the harder to kill. Some of them even wear helmets, so make sure you use your birds wisely in order to get rid of all of them.

Angry Birds HD features nice graphics, and cannot be more simple to play: grab the bird sitting in the slingshot, aim, choose the intensity of your throw, and release the bird. Easy. The game doesn’t come with any tunes, but the sound effects are hilarious (see video below). It also features 120 levels, and supports the Crystal service from Chillingo (online player profile, ability to add other players to a list of friends, cloud-based storage for saving achievements and game histories).

What we liked: The game is fun, challenging, and addictive. Some levels will drive you crazy!

What we didn’t like: No soundtrack, but the sound effects help. A bit on the pricey side, but for less than $5, you will have fun – guaranteed.

To buy or not to buy: Angry Birds HD features 10+ hours of gameplay, lots of replay value, and challenging yet fun levels. Each level requires skill, imagination, and plain brute force to crush the green pigs. Most of all, the game is hilarious and fun to play!

Agreed that it doesn’t have a soundtrack, but if they included more music similar to the opening music. I’d probably fling Angry Birds at myself rather than pigs. Seriously, its like Danny Elfman got carried away with a synthesizer.
