Looking to Resell Your Wi-Fi iPad?

Thinking about upgrading to a 3G + Wi-Fi iPad model?  Several people have asked me if they should upgrade to a 3G iPad. With all the frenzy and buzz about the latest 3G iPad, it is easy to understand why some people may be thinking about upgrading. Some people would like more mobility. My simple answer is – It all depends on your lifestyle!

If you are thinking about selling your existing Wi-Fi Only iPad, this is the time to do it. We reported yesterday about the iPad being sold out at many stores. Now that the iPad has been released in the U.S. for almost 5 weeks, many consumers have been able to see the device in action and are looking to buy iPads however they can.

Many people have asked me if there is an easy way to sell an iPad. There is good news for you. There is a buying market for your existing iPad, and the process of preparing your existing iPad for sale is easy. The following are a few ideas and hints on how to sell your existing iPad.

How do I sell it?

There are several sites you can use to sell your iPad. The most obvious one is eBay, which has set up a dedicated iPad sales page. eBay has many iPad listings already, and you will find lots of information in their site. You have the ability to check auctions, compare prices, iPad selling conditions and many more details.

Another site is Craigslist. I quickly verified the local listings for our Dallas area, and there are many iPads on sale right now. I have two friends that were able to sell their Wi-Fi iPads via Craigslist just three weeks after the iPad launched. Make sure you check your local area. Something tells me that you should be able to sell it!

Make sure you have a way of collecting and tracking your precious money. Paypal’s free app on the App Store will do the trick for you.

Restore it to a brand New Condition!

Regardless of how long you’ve had your iPad, most likely you already have tons of apps installed on your device. Don’t forget your personal data either!

Before you decide to ship your iPad, make sure you erase all data and personal content from the iPad. This is where you need to restore it to its factory settings. Here are some easy steps on how to do it:

  • From your iPad home screen, choose the “Settings” icon.
  • Choose “General”, then tap “Reset”.
  • Since you want to restore your iPad to its factory settings make sure you erase all data. To do so, choose “Erase All Content and Settings”.

This resets all settings to their original values and erases all your information and media. Your iPad will reboot, and will display the iTunes image asking for the iPad to be re-connected to iTunes. Don’t do anything else. Your buyer will start from there when he/she is ready to activate their new toy!

The next step is to simply ship it! Be kind to your new buyer. Make sure you place the iPad back in its original box with all required equipment – instructions, charger, and sync cable. The iPad is a “Hot Selling” item overseas. Make sure that you account for shipping expenses when selling it!

    Hey, Roberto:

I don’t think all the iPads are sold out quite, yet. But it’s getting there. lol.

I called my local store (in Ridgeland, MS) and they have the WIFI model in stock, but not the 3G. So it looks like it will soon be sold out everywhere. That was quick, wasn’t it?

    Cheers,
    Ivan

Hi Ivan. Some stores do still have some stock. You are correct.

The thing we’ve found out is that stock is depleting very quickly.

      Cheers!

Quite a number of non-wifi iPads have been sold on eBay.
Primarily to buyers outside of the US.
    here is an infographic: http://thenextcorner.net/ipad-infographic.html

Now, it’s waiting for the iPad wifi numbers to come in.

I sold my 32gig wifi ipad on craigslist and got what I paid for it (sold it locally in a hand-to-hand transaction). The guy who bought it said he was giving it to his mother for mother’s day and all the stores were completely sold out (we have several Best Buys and at least 2 Apple Stores within a 20 min drive from my house). So if you are like me (had to buy a wifi iPad when they first came out knowing you’d buy a 3G one a month later) I’d say sell it now. There still seems to be pretty strong demand and you can pretty much recoup your entire purchase price (maybe even make some money if you sell it internationally).
