300K 3G iPads Sold in the First Weekend

The first weekend of 3G sales has come to an end. So, how did it go? According to estimates made by analyst Gene Muster with Piper Jaffray, Apple sold 300,000 3G iPads its first weekend on the market.

Apple Insider reported Munster’s 3G iPad numbers today. He surveyed 50 stores this weekend (some of them in person) and 49 out of those indicated they had sold out of the 3G versions by Sunday. In comparison, sales numbers for the first weekend of the 3G iPad equaled the first day of WiFi only iPad sales on April 3rd. By the end of the first weekend, the WiFi version had sold over 500,000 units.

This is an impressive sales pace and exceeded Apple’s initial iPhone sales.  Apple sold 1,389,000 iPhones during its first two quarters on the market. If Munster’s numbers are accurate, Apple has already sold over 1,000,000 iPads in the first month alone.

Based on the numbers collected to date, Munster estimates the total iPad sales for 2010 to be 4.3 million and believes Apple’s latest product will continue to be successful with strong consumer demand.  We’ll have to wait for official sales numbers from Apple to be sure, Munster’s previous iPad sales estimates were off by several 100,000 units due to an error in his calculation and over estimating online sales.

UPDATE: Apple announced they sold 1 million iPads in 28 days. “One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”
