Dr. Seuss Books – App Review

Everyone loves the fun rhymes, silly text and timeless illustrations in the classic children’s books by Dr. Seuss! A collection of those books are now available for you and your kids to enjoy in the App Store.
I reviewed The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax and really enjoyed them. These well known stories combine education and entertainment into one complete app package and promise to keep your little ones busy for hours. Each book has three options for reading:
- Read to Me – The story is read to you and you turn the pages when you’re ready to move on.
- Read it Myself – Read the book yourself, tap the text if you want to hear it read to you and turn the page when you are ready to move to the next page.
- Auto Play - More like a movie. The story is read to you and advances automatically.
Kids can easily interact and follow along with these classic stories. All three reading options highlight the words as they are read. The “Read to Me” and “Read it Myself” modes also have words that pop out when you touch different pictures on the pages.
Oceanhouse Media did a great job transitioning these Dr. Seuss stories and illustrations from books to iPad apps. Check out The Cat and the Hat or The Lorax for a great way to get children interested in reading.
Other Dr. Seuss apps available for the iPad ($2.99 each) include:
Although not available for the iPad, the Lorax Garden iPhone app ($2.99) is a wonderful compliment to The Lorax. This fun game lets kids regrow the forests in 10 different locations around the world by growing flowers and creating their own unique Truffula trees. A fantastic simulation game for kids!
What I liked: A classic story delivered in a modern way.
What I didn’t like: Some of the words in The Cat in the Hat did not match the picture touched during “Read to Me” and “Read it Myself” modes.
To buy or not to buy: You can’t go wrong with either one of these story apps! PadGadget Recommended.
