iPad Quick Tip

Now that people are getting their iPads, we thought it would be good to start an iPad Quick Tips series to help users get the most out of their new gadget. We’ll post our tips on a regular basis so keep coming back to find out the latest tricks and tips.

Special Characters: If you ever wanted to show your character, this next tip is for you.  The iPad’s keyboard holds many undiscovered secrets including an entire set of special characters and accents (diacritic).  To access these new characters, simply bring up the keyboard and hold down a key such as a U or O.  You’ll see a menu pop-up with additional variations of that character.  One of the best shortcuts is holding down the .com key, when in Safari or Mail, to get a set of additional domains such as .edu, .org and .net.

Thanks Aaron for today’s tip.

Didn’t know that, I’ll check it out when I get home. Thanks!

This has been on iPhone all along.

Has it? I never noticed, but of course didn’t do much serious typing before the iPad. The – button also brings up an em dash and a bullet char. Very useful.

I imagine all the same tricks and more are on the ipad as are on the phone. Anyone know how to a caps lock?

I usually keep my finger on shift while I type to simulate a caps lock. Cheers

Caps-lock is effectuated by double tapping the Shift-key. You may need to enable the action in Settings. My favorite shortcut: hold down the comma (,) and it becomes an apostrophe (‘)!
