Want a Smaller iPad?

email

According to DigiTimes,  Apple is reportedly working on a new smaller version of the iPad.  The smaller iPad is supposedly going to have a screen in the 5 to 7 inch range and is rumored to launch in 1Q 2010. DigiTimes senior analyst Mingchi Kuo says his talks with components makers have indicated the new device will be priced below $400.

A smaller iPad would surprise us as this would further segment the market into a new class of device.  We don’t feel that Apple will introduce smaller form factors of the iPad and will instead add features and functionality to the current design.

What do you think?  Leave us a comment and let us know if you’d want a smaller iPad.

DigiTimes? When was the last time they were correct about a rumor? Its rubbish, every rumor that comes from digitimes is full of nothing but bull. Apple would be idiots to make a smaller iPad.

I personally wouldn’t mind an in-between an iPod Touch and an iPad. Let’s face it, the iPad is not exactly portable and Dell and others are coming out with 5 and 7 incher tablets. I can’t say Apple is one to succumb to peer pressure, but it wouldn’t cost them much to design a smaller tablet running the exact same software… It’s more of a why not?

What about an iPad Jr. An iPad that is just for kids. Load it with games, educational apps, and interactive books for 3-10 year olds. You would have to handicap the machine some to prevent cannibalization, but apple could dominate the hand held toy market with a $150 to $250 iPad marketed to 3-10 yr olds. Then once they hit middle school you give them a full blown iPad for all their text books and first person shooter games :-) .
