Apple Unveils iPhone OS 4
Apple held their iPhone OS 4 media event today at their Cupertino offices and announced major additions to the OS running on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
Steve Jobs started off the event talking about the iPad and its successful launch this weekend and informed the crowd that as of today Apple had sold 450,000 units. iPad users downloaded 600,000 books and over 3.5 million applications.
This brings the total app store download total to 4 billion with over 185,000 apps now in the Apple Apps Store on iTunes with 3,500 of them iPad specific titles.
The new OS 4 will be released this Summer for iPhone and iPod Touch user and will be available for the iPad this Fall. The new OS release will incorporate over 100 new user features, Jobs focused on 7 “tentpole” features in his presentation:
- Multitasking – the ability to run multiple apps and support for background apps
- Folders – A way to store and organize your applications
- Enhanced mail – unified mail system provides access to multiple mail accounts in one interface
- iBook for iPhone OS 4 – iBooks for the iPhone and iPod Touch
- Enterprise – better data protection, Exchange Server 2010 support, security and device management
- Game Center – social gaming network allows you to invite friends, matchmaking, leaderboards and achievement
- iAd – Mobile advertising platform
