HTML5 gets CBS.com Attention

Looks like CBS.com is one of the media companies planning to use HTML5 to allow iPad viewers to watch its videos. The Other Mac Blog made a great finding about some video tests at CBS.com. They found what appeared to be HTML5 video tests when two odd clips appeared on the CBS.com homepage. Some screenshots have been shown with some text that read “iPad – test – dan config.”

All of this was further examined by MacRumors. They found that if users visit CBS.com using the iPad SDK Simulator they are sent to a different version of a video (instead of displaying that video using Flash). The videos, which appear to be ready to be delivered in HTML5, aren’t playable (yet), according to MacRumors. This can be a very good indication of CBS.com plans.

If all of this works out, I have to say the move to HTML5 by others such as NBC, Disney and others will follow and provide a nice way to cater to all iPad users. We’ve all speculated that large companies would sell us videos via iTunes or via their own sold apps. But, certainly HTML5 provides another venue for us to consume just that.

Yeah – most big Web media outfits know that Flash is dead technology and on the way out. The iPad is just accelerating that.
